Plywood & Sheet Goods Buying Guide
Sheet goods — plywood, OSB, MDF, and particleboard — are fundamental building materials. Knowing how many sheets you need prevents waste and extra trips.
Standard Sheet Sizes
| Size | Area | Common Use | |------|------|------------| | 4' × 8' | 32 sq ft | Most common, all applications | | 4' × 4' | 16 sq ft | Small projects, easier transport | | 4' × 10' | 40 sq ft | Commercial, tall walls | | 5' × 5' | 25 sq ft | Specialty, Baltic birch |
Plywood Thickness Options
| Nominal | Actual | Common Use | |---------|--------|------------| | ¼" | 0.205" | Drawer bottoms, cabinet backs | | ⅜" | 0.354" | Light backing, templates | | ½" | 0.468" | Cabinet sides, light subfloor | | ⅝" | 0.578" | Subflooring | | ¾" | 0.703" | Cabinets, shelves, furniture | | 1" | 0.953" | Heavy-duty applications |
Cut Planning Tips
- Lay out your cuts on paper first to minimize waste
- Align grain direction — plywood face grain runs the 8-foot length
- Account for saw kerf — each rip cut loses about ⅛"
- Consider half sheets if you only need a few small pieces
