How to Calculate Deck Boards: The Complete Guide

Building a deck is one of the most popular home improvement projects, and getting your material estimate right is the first step to a successful build. Ordering too little means delays; ordering too much wastes money. This guide walks you through exactly how to calculate the number of deck boards you need.

Step 1: Measure Your Deck Area

Start by measuring the total area of your deck in square feet (length × width). For rectangular decks, this is straightforward. For L-shaped or complex decks, break the area into rectangles and add them together.

Step 2: Choose Your Decking Board Size

The most common decking board sizes are:

• 5/4×6: The most popular choice. Actual dimensions are approximately 1" × 5.5". Provides a good balance of strength and weight.
• 2×6: Thicker and stronger, actual dimensions 1.5" × 5.5". Better for high-traffic commercial decks.
• 5/4×4: Narrower boards at 3.5" actual width. More seams mean more drainage but more installation time.

Step 3: Account for Board Spacing

Always leave a gap between deck boards for drainage and wood movement. Standard spacing:

• Natural wood: 1/8" gap
• Composite decking: 3/16" to 1/4" (follow manufacturer specs)
• Wet-installed lumber: Can be butted tight — it will shrink as it dries

Step 4: Calculate Board Count

Divide the deck width (in inches) by the board width plus gap to get the number of boards across. Then determine how many board lengths you need to span the deck length. Multiply these together for your raw board count.

Step 5: Add Waste Factor

Always add a waste factor to your calculation:

• Simple rectangular deck: 10%
• Angled or diagonal boards: 15%
• Complex shapes, picture frames: 15-20%
• Herringbone or parquet patterns: 20-25%
